UN Indigenous Forum Debates Violence against Women, Girls

The 11th UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues on Thursday will debate problems related to violence against women and girls from the autochthonous peoples. Participants in the meeting will analyze actions undertaken or unfulfilled by the governments on this matter, including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples approved in 2007.

The document says that the States will adopt measures, in collaboration with the indigenous peoples, to ensure that indigenous women and children are protected and guaranteed from all forms of violence and discrimination.

The issue on indigenous women and their contribution to the processes of citizenship and governance was the objective of a special session held on Monday to show the results of an experience developed by organizations from Mexico and Central America.

The implementation of that project contributed to the institutionalization of programs that involve, on one side, the Government as a guarantor of rights and, on the other hand, the Academy and indigenous women and civil society organizations.

Violence against women and girls throughout the world is among the priorities of the UN-Women agency, created over a year and led by former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.
