Beyond Fashion: Dear Kate Lingerie

  • Dear Kate

Dear Kate has recently joined a busy field of women’s undergarments with a unique spin.  They stand out by adopting a crucial function-meets-fashion concept, with the added bonus of being designed by and for women. Every part of the collection is designed to be leak-resistant and light.

Founder Julie Sygiel, a chemical engineering student at Brown University, came up with a patent-pending fabric after extensive testing. Imagine a fashionista meets scientist and you get Dear Kate. This discipline is what makes for comfortable, yet sexy underwear, while also providing a solution to a problem seldom spoken aloud.

I had a chance to speak to Julie about her line:

Thanks for taking the time to speak to us Julie. I would like to start by asking what motivated you and your crew to come up with Dear Kate underwear?

JS: I was a chemical engineer studying at Brown University when I took an entrepreneurship class. Our professor said the best business plans he’d seen provide solutions to everyday problems. We started brainstorming and realized that every woman has a horror story during “that time of the month” and wondered if we could create an innovative new type of underwear that women could wear that would make life easier. We also realized that women of all ages, especially moms, could use our underwear in the case of little leaks that happen when laughing, sneezing, or exercising (yes, laughing ’til you pee your pants is derived from real life!).

We noticed a particular desire to address certain “unmentionable” topics that we all know affect women daily. Do you also think that women should feel comfortable addressing all the natural issues related to their bodies?

JS: I think that many women and men are uncomfortable discussing “women’s issues” in public and many never even speak with friends or their doctor about it. Leaks are a huge issue that can affect a woman’s quality of life and we believe that the more people who talk about it, the more women will connect with resources that will help her improve her experience during her period and in the case of bladder leakage. This also extends to a variety of natural health-related issues– the more we know about our bodies and resources available, the more we are able to decide what’s best for ourselves.

What materials are used in making “Dear Kate” underwear and what is the feedback you have received in terms of how comfortable they are?

JS: Dear Kates are comprised of two different materials. The outer body is 75% nylon/ 24% Lycra and is leak-free. The inner lining is an advanced wicking microfiber that is 100% micropolyester. Customers have written in to tell us that they’ve loved wearing their Dear Kates when rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding, and many other outdoor adventures in addition to everyday wearing. We have heard that the lace and fabric is super stretchy and fits great on the body– no bunching or moving around!

How will Dear Kate evolve in the future?

JS: We are excited to expand into a range of solution-based garments. We’re always open to suggestions so if you have anything that you’d like to share with us, please send it our way at hello@dearkates.com.
