Suicides in Mexico Increased 300 Percent in 30 Years

suicidesThe number of suicides in Mexico has increased by 300 percent during the last 30 years and this represents today one of the first causes of death in the nation, according to the Ministry of Health (SSA).

In a report sent to commissions of the Chamber of Deputies, this entity warned that currently an average of 4 cases out of every 100 thousand inhabitants is recorded, being the young population the most affected.

In the case of men, the SSA declared that mortality from this cause in the group raging from 14 to 19 years represents a 10,6 percent of the total of suicide cases.

Meanwhile, the 20-24 year group represents a 15,4 percent of suicide deaths, and the 25-29 year group, a 13,7 percent.

Regarding women, in the same order of age frames, the percentages are 18,1; 17,3; and 12,1 percent, respectively.

Consequently, the SSA specified that the National Council for Mental Health incorporates a Specific Intervention Program as part of preventive actions for minors and teenagers.

It indicated that the purpose of this project is the prevention of suicides through risk detection, via the generation of a work platform in each of the states. (PL)
