Lufthansa Pilots’ Strike Causes Travel Chaos in Germany

lufthansa_strikeA strike by Lufthansa pilots is affecting over 2,100 flights and creating more chaos for travellers after Germany´s rail system was crippled by a weekend work stoppage.

With an impact on 200,000 travellers, the Lufthansa strike has been expanded to include a one day walkout Tuesday involving the German carrier´s long-haul fleet as pilots raise the pressure on management.

The Vereinigung Cockpit union already had already announced a 35-hour stoppage at Lufthansa’s short-haul fleet starting Monday afternoon, the latest in a string of walkouts over retirement benefits.

Lufthansa said it has cancelled over 1,500 short-haul flights but is confident that it will still be able to operate 700, or one third of all flights, with management pilots and ‘volunteers’. The cancellations include dozens of flights between London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh and German cities. (PL)
