Pacifika brings to mind thoughts of my favorite ocean, days spent under the beautiful sun and the sound of waves, nearly eternal summers. The band takes these ideas quite seriously and applies it to their uniquely textured and incredibly smooth and sophisticated sound.
Who are Pacifika? Silvana Kane the lead singer, born in Peru brings her sensuous voice and adds a touch of traditional Latin sounds, augmented with touches of Electronica, Pop as well as Jazz; Adam Popowitz the guitar player brings yet another angle to the music with his obvious good sense for rhythm guitar, he is also a gifted producer and helps bring a layer of quality seldom seen in newer bands; and Toby Peter a bassist also born in Canada but raised in the Caribbean with a range of music taste that defies an easy frame.
Pacifika is to me the “alternative” sound of world music, a music that is not ashamed to recognize its many roots, but not afraid to rewrite some of its rules. The sensuousness of Spanish is up and front, but there is more complexity here than just mere exoticism, partly pushed forth by Silvana’s warm, passionate voice.
Pacifika’s album “Asuncion” is now on sale, so if you want to feel the warmth of a genuine summer, the promised gentleness of a love affair, a good trip from North to South and a kiss to the spirit, then Pacifika is for you. Pacifika is currently on tour in North America.
