I first met Kevin many years ago when we were running around Ryerson with wind-up 16mm cameras in film production 101. Since then, he has written lots of good songs and has been performing all around town. Recently we sat down for a few pints and a chat.
So how long have you been playing?
Probably about five years now
You’ve been writing songs the whole time?
I’d been writing for a while before that. It took some time to get up the nerve to play shows being a solo act.
Have you ever had a band support or have you always played solo?
Pretty much always solo, I jam with my roommate sometimes, he has a toy drum kit, he would probably need a better kit to play shows, although I think that he wants to.
So who are your main influences? I’ve seen you do a very solid Wilco cover, so I know that’s one of them.
Yeah Wilco is definitely an influence, but I would start with the solo artists like Dylan of course. An even bigger influence for me is Loudon Wainwright cause he has a certain humor to his songs and is very direct which I enjoy. Dylan can be so cryptic sometimes that you wonder what the hell he’s talking about.
So how would you describe your sound?
It’s definitely very folk, I think being a solo artist I kind of gravitate toward that. I think if I was in a band I might write more heavy rock songs
You have a show coming up on September 12th?
Yes, the 12th of September with my buddy Amos from Montreal, we have been friends since high school, he was the “guitar guy” back then, so it’s pretty cool to be doing a show together now. I was more the “funny guitar guy” doing Hootie & the Blowfish covers at lunchtime.
