First Ever Aerial Footage of Uncontacted Amazon Tribe Released

Actress Gillian Anderson, known for her role in the television series ‘X Files’, launched a new campaign by Survival International for one of the world’s last isolated tribes with an exceptional new film.

The film shows with extraordinary detail one of the uncontacted tribes on the border of Brazil and Peru. These are the first aerial images of this isolated community.

Gillian Anderson said today: ‘What comes across very powerfully from this amazing footage is how healthy and confident these people appear. I hope they can be left alone – but that will only happen if the loggers are stopped.’

The sequence was filmed by BBC1 in collaboration with the Brazilian government for the new season of the hit British TV show ‘Human Planet’. The Brazilian government has authorized Survival to use these images as part of his campaign. Several pictures have been released early in the week to the world by Survival.

Global media coverage of this event has pushed the Peruvian authorities into action – they just announced their future cooperation with the Brazilian Department of Indian Affairs (FUNAI) to protect the area more effectively.

The survival of these people is threatened by the invasion of illegal loggers on the Peruvian side of the border. Brazilian authorities believe that the influx of loggers forcing uncontacted tribes from Peru to flee to Brazil, at the risk of conflict with other uncontacted tribes living in the region.

Stephen Corry, Survival’s director said today: ‘The very dangerous future for uncontacted tribal peoples should be of worldwide concern. Gillian Anderson’s help here will draw more attention to it – vital if the world is finally going to call a real halt to the centuries of destruction.’
