Featuring Karin Dreijer Andersson of The Knife

Fever Ray is which one half of Swedish bizarro-pop act The Knife, and features a post-natal Karin Dreijer Andersson who claims her daydreams of parenthood inspired this dark, yet impressive record. Karin couldn’t be more right, as Anderssen’s newest solo effort obscures the line between imagination and reality.

While seemingly barren, Fever Ray is a vivid record that is constructed on a building crescendo with light synths and traditional percussion adorning the record. The first two tracks If I Had a Heart and When I Grow Up give the feel of an ancient pagan ritual while Now’s the Only Time I Know and album closer Coconut are like a dark expedition into a cold, lonely forest. The record’s minimalist nature may at first be difficult to unravel as there aren’t any indie-dancefloor anthems like The Knife’s previous efforts such as Pass This On or Heartbeats, but instead compensates with its deeper but seemingly vague lyrics. Concrete Walls is actually a homage to parenthood with lyrics like “In my arms she was so warm/ Eyes are open and mouth cries/ Haven’t slept since summer” and “When I Grow Up” deals with the pain of loneliness. While Fever Ray uses the same tricks as The Knife with a little keyboard there, a little percussion here and Karin’s masculine slow-motion vocals . Sonically, the record is an adventure deep in the depths of the imagination and is mysterious, like the dark of the night.
