Lights Out! Earth Hour is Here!

The WWF and many other participating organizations are calling for this March 26 to be “Earth Hour”. The idea: Every individual, every town and business is encouraged to turn off their lights today for 60 minutes, the world’s largest demonstration on climate change. Last year 128 countries around the world participated with hundreds of millions of people in 4616 cities.

The demonstration is one thing. A much more effective measure, however, is a change in the way we create electricity, a call by the organizers of Earth Hour as well. Why not instead of coal and nuclear power not try wind, water and solar energy, which saves a lot of greenhouse gases from going into the atmosphere, and radically change our approach to nuclear energy, which illustrated in the face of the disaster in Fukushima becomes more urgent than ever. But tonite this case the change is not much harder than turning off your lights for an hour so why not? The electricity less fun starts at 8:30 PM Toronto time.
