Hot Docs: Hot Ticket Day 1

This year, we will be highlighting some documentaries that you will definitely want to see at this year’s Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

Hot Docs begins today, April 28th and its opening film POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold. In this film, “Morgan Spurlock and producing/writing partner Jeremy Chilnick set their sights on the advertising world.” The idea is to expose the audience to a variety of methods used by companies to insert their products into what is know as “corporate entertainment.”  One disturbing aspect of the film is the idea that we cannot escape advertisement regardless of how cynical we may be regarding it or how immune we think ourselves to be.

The film opens the festival tonight at the Winter Garden Theatre at 6pm. This film shows again Friday, April 29 at the Isabel Bader Theatre at 4:15pm. Both screenings have gone RUSH. But do not despair; both are large venues and if you line up early enough, you may be able to get in.

We think that MMA fans and those new to the sport will find Fightville quite an interesting documentary. Just in time for Saturday’s UFC 129 fight, comes this documentary from directors Michael Tucker and Petra Epperlein, whom some of you will know from their first feature doc Gunner Palace. In Fightville, we come to know Dustin Poirier and Albert Stainback, who train at a gym in Louisiana.  Tucker and Eppertein bring us their stories along with other key individuals at this gym. The film tells of the struggles and hard road to becoming a champion. If you thought UFC was just about testosterone you will find a film that speaks to the aspirations of working class folks.  We are also interviewing both the director and the stars of the film tomorrow!

Fightville plays tonight at the Winter Garden Theatre at 9:30pm; same-day tickets are still available! It screens again Friday, April 29 at the Isabel Bader Theatre at 1:45pm; as well as on Tuesday, May 3 at Cumberland 2 at 3:45pm.
