CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival 2011

The CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival (WSFF) is now underway. The festival has become world renown in the calibre of short films that it brings to Toronto audiences.  The opening night program Award Winners from Around the World was filled with great shorts.

Here are our top picks for this year’s festival. In case you do not have much time to catch more at WSFF, we hope you can at least try to see a few of these.

The Comeback (Official Selection)
“Whether a sharp-tongued response or an attempt to regain control – confident comebacks can make or break you. This diverse collection of shorts celebrates that inner competitor, elucidates the human condition, and may even leave you rooting for the underdog!”

"The Origin of Creatures"

We like this program for its sense of humour but also because it presents real stories that cross boundaries. We recommend The Origin of Creatures, The Reception, Taxi Libre.

Out There (Sci-Fi)
“Species are disappearing, capitalism is dead, jobs are scarce, plastic surgery is the norm and nature is seen as a quaint relic of the past. The future feels awfully close in these visions of the near-future.”

"Rosa"

The program selections work well. There is great CGI, creative animation and of course, interesting plots. Why check this one out? Because it includes shorts like RosaUmbra and Yuri Lennon’s Landing on Alpha 26.

Accidental Witness (Official Selection)
“We see things we’re not meant to. We hear things that we should never have to. Accidents happen. People make terrible mistakes. Things get lost. A series of unpredictable events and their inadvertent observers.”

"Marvin"

Haven’t we been in one of more of these situations? The shorts in this program will certainly make you think. Some highlights include Ketchup, Marvin and It is nothing (Ce n’est rien).

Creepy (Midnight Mania)
“Scary stories around the campfire, snuff video, violent impalement, gross body fluids, abominations of the natural and unnatural worlds…just another Friday night. The stuff nightmares are made of.”

"Ella"

For those who like things a little spooky, Creepy is the program to see. With the likes of The Legend of Beaver Dam, Ella and All Flowers in Time, you’ll be set for the night.

Tell us a Story! (Shorts for Shorties)
“This colourful collection of animated tales from far and wide will charm both the young and young-at-heart.”

"Dream Giver"

Always one of our favourite programs, the Shorts for Shorties is always filled with films that will capture the imagination while also teaching some valuable lessons. For the children and the child in you, we think you’ll enjoy Lokomoschine, DreamGiver and The Gruffalo.

WSFF runs until Sunday, June 5th. You can purchase tickets in-person and online. For full listing information visit the festival’s website.
