Amy Winehouse Found Dead in her London Flat

British singer Amy Winehouse, 27, was found dead this afternoon at her home in Camden Town, north London, as confirmed by a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police. It is still unclear what caused her death.

According to the BBC account, the singer was found at her flat in Camden, north London. A person called at 3:54PM (London time) the ambulance service, which sent two vehicles there, but Winehouse was already dead.

The singer had begun a tour in June in Europe and according to people in her environment she was in good shape. However, the concert which took place in Belgrade on June 18, one in which she could barely sing while staggering on stage, again demonstrated that she had unresolved problems. Winehouse arrived an hour late, one reason the public became very angry. That same week, her agent announced that she was canceling her tour.

The singer rose to fame in 2006 due to her song Rehab , but also for her continuing problems with alcohol and drugs. Always characterized as a controversial artist, one famous incident was when she famously called Madonna an “old lady” and even confessed to a suicide attempt. She also spent time in and out of hospitals and much of the British media, especially tabloids, speculated with her fondness for alcohol and drug overdoses.

For better and for worse, Winehouse, who was born on September 14, 1983, became an icon of world music, which had a rawness and quality that could not be ignored.

The singer just released two albums, Frank and Back to Black. The second one catapulted her to fame and gave her five Grammy Awards. Also in 2008, she emerged as one of the great protagonists of the Brit Awards. Fresh from a sting of therapy to overcome her addiction to drugs, the artist received a standing ovation as she went on to a great performance of a couple her best known songs.

The news quickly spread in social networks like Twitter and Facebook with many expressing sorrow but no surprise that this may have been the end for a flawed yet very talented star. May she rest in peace.
