Jack Layton Dies

NDP Leader Jack Layton died early Monday morning after a struggle with cancer. He was 61 years old. Jack’s death has come as a shock to his supporters and foes alike.

He spent his full life in politics as an academic, then as a city Councillor for the city of Toronto, then becoming Canada’s most popular political leader and leader of its official opposition. His personal popularity helped propel the NDP’s “orange crush” in the 2011 federal election which saw the NDP reach its highest number of seats in its history. Very sad news and a loss for progressive politics in Canada whether one agreed with all he stood for or not. He will unmistakably be remembered as a fighter not only against a cancer that took his life in such a treacherous way, but ultimately a fighter for a more progressive and inclusive Canada .

We join with his family, friends and comrades in mourning.
