Japan: Cold Front Brings about Water Leaks in Fukushima Nuclear Plant

At least 14 decontaminated water leaks were found Monday in the pipes of the recycling system of Fukushima´s stricken nuclear plant, due to the cold weather that dropped 8 degrees below zero.

The plant´s operator, the Tokyo Electric Power company (TEPCO) reported that pipes froze due to the low temperatures, forcing them to stop cooling at a spent fuel pond, as soon as the leak of water was detected.

TEPCO explained that as soon as the leaks were found, permanent system controls were reinforced to protect the pipes from the cold with heating or isolating materials as necessary.

TEPCO had reported a week ago theat the volume of radioactive substances in Fukushima had slightly increased due to the cleaning of rubble.

It will take years to definitely close the reactors in the Fukushima nuclear plant, wich collapsed after the March 11, 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami.
