Recommended Friday March 23rd: The Nun’s Vacation

The Nun’s Vacation follows the successful and critically acclaimed Fringe Festival run of Israel Horowitz’s, The Indian Wants The Bronx, later Tom Walmsley’s Something Red and then Walmsley’s Blood. Blood went on to garner three Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations under the Independent Threatre Production Division in 2011: Outstanding Production – Doghouse Riley Productions for Blood, Outstanding Direction – Peter Pasyk for Blood, and Outstanding Performance by a Female in a Principle Role – Sandy Duarte for Blood. Ms. Duarte was not only a nominee but came out a winner as well. And it is with Sandy Duarte that actor Stephen Chambers teams up with for a third time (and third Tom Walmsley production) to bring you Mr. Walmsley’s unpublished and never before been performed, brand new play, The Nun’s Vaction. Joining Chambers and Duarte on stage is Glen Matthews, himself a Robert Meritt Award nominee as best actor for last year’s Logan and I in Nova Scotia. Helming this project is director Jack Grinhaus, himself a Dora Award nominee.

The Nun’s Vacation is about a nun. It’s also about an ex-priest turned psychologist and it’s about that ex-priest’s current and possibly favourite patient. Three people. Three people in need of answers. The Nun’s Vacation asks; is there a right or wrong way to love? Depends. To some, it’s an adventure. To others, it’s about love. And yet to others, it doesn’t exist and these people are called Christians. Enter Shannon. The Nun at a crossroads. She hasn’t lost faith but is curious. Can she be free to find out what she really wants while still believing in God? Then there’s Pierce and Brody. Two men in love. With each other? Not necessarily but what would be wrong with that? Well, nothing. But also, everything if we’re talking about God and tolerance. This play is essentially a comedy, a farce yet there is nothing farcical about it.
