Unions Highlight Mass General Strike in Spain

The main Spanish unions on Thursday highlighted the mass participation of workers in the first general strike against the conservative government of President Mariano Rajoy, which is implementing a labor reform that makes unemployment cheaper and easier. The two major associations, the Workers’ Commissions (CCOO) and the General Union of Workers (UGT), highlighted the large participation of workers in the walkout, which has affected such services as garbage collection, post offices and hospitals, without any incidents.

Despite complying with minimum services agreed upon with authorities, the early hours of the strike strongly affected public transportation, especially the operation of buses and the subway in Madrid.

According to the UGT, 95 percent of the garbage collection workers have supported the action around the country.

The unions also stressed that the strike is total in the automotive industry, where major factories have closed, and in iron and steel, infrastructure works and the construction materials industries.

The peaceful protest also affected air transportation: the four main Spanish airlines, Iberia, Air Nostrum, Vueling and Air Europa, cancelled 674 flights on Thursday.
