Security Council Discusses Sending of Observers to Syria

The Security Council will prepare on Friday a resolution to authorize the sending of observers to Syria to monitor how the situation is going on after the cessation of hostilities initiated by the Government on Thursday. The presence of this mission in the Arab country was requested by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his special envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, after starting the implementation of a six-point plan agreed with Damascus to put end to the conflict.

The issue has wide support from various key countries in addressing the problem, particularly the United States, Russia and China, permanent members of the Security Council, and the Syrian government itself, too.

Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters in New York, Ambassador of Syria, Bashar Jaafari, confirmed the support of his government for the sending of observers, which measure was agreed between Damascus and Annan.

He said that currently the Syrian authorities and the UN analyze the final points of the technical aspects related to the deployment of the mission, once violence end.

In this regard, the first contacts took place last week, when the appointed team leader, Norwegian General Robert Mood, spoke in the Syrian capital on technical preparations for the arrival of an advanced group of observers.
