North by Northeast (NXNE) and AOL Canada today announced that three-time Grammy-Award winning group The Flaming Lips will headline an electrifying free show at Yonge-Dundas Square on Saturday, June 16.  Celebrating its 18th year, NXNE Music presents more than 650 artists for 300,000 attendees and generates more than $47 million for the city.  NXNE takes over Toronto June 11-17, 2012.

Saturday night at NXNE is always legendary – and this year is no different.  Oklahoma psych-rockers The Flaming Lips, renowned for their elaborate live shows featuring costumes, balloons, puppets—yes, puppets – and electric light performances, will bring their psychedelic A-game to Canada’s pre-eminent music festival.

NXNE Music has also confirmed that Bad ReligionRaekwon & Ghostface Killah and Matthew Good will headline free shows at Yonge-Dundas Square (YDS) throughout the seven-day festival. The NXNE Music line-up also includes performances at YDS and in the clubs by Of MontrealNo Use For A Name, Purity RingUnknown Mortal OrchestraDeath GripsThe MenBleachedGood Riddance, METZCeremonyPlants & AnimalsThe Death SetThe Sadies & Andre WilliamsOberhoferReigning SoundAction Bronson2:54Yamantaka/ /Sonic TitanThe Hundred in The HandsRival Schools, Killer Mike, Young MagicHayes CarllFriendsHolleradoBran Van 3000The Black BellesDoldrumsOdonis OdonisMac DeMarcoBass Drum of DeathPorcelain RaftExitmusicViolensGrass WidowEight and a Half, DZ DeathraysJonathan ToubinArt vs. ScienceB L A C K I EThe Nils and Ivan Julian (ex-Richard Hell & The Voidoids).

On Friday, June 15, SiriusXM Canada presents Canadian rocker Matthew Good, who will bring his own brand of political music to YDS. NXNE’s closing night at YDS – presented by Intel on Sunday, June 17 – will feature a performance by influential rappers Raekwon & Ghostface Killah of Wu-Tang Clan. Intel will also be launching their Intel® Superstars Search – where they will be looking for Canadian rising stars.  It’s the intersection of Music, Technology and Creativity.

NXNE 2012 will mark the Toronto debut of aggressive underground experimental hip hop trio Death Grips, dirty rock ‘n roll sirens Bleached, hardcore punks Ceremony, Jack White-approved The Black Belles, British shoegazers 2:54 and three-piece dance band Art vs. Science.
