New Paraguayan President Facing a Growing Revolt

The new Paraguayan president Federico Franco, who took power after the dismissal by the Congress of Fernando Lugo, will face from the beginning of his management criticism at national and international levels.

Social organizations, especially peasant organizations, since last night have expressed their rejection to the change of the Executive and staged protests on Friday night with incidents in some parts of the countryside and even in the main square Plaza de Armas and other places of the capital.

In the political field, Guasú Front, a coalition of organizations that support Lugo in the 2008 election, said they will not recognized the Franco government and predicted that they will express their disapproval in actions throughout the country. Fairly complex is the international situation for Franco, because South American country members of UNASUR and Mercosur are openly against what happened here Friday.

One element that weighs in this regard is the fact that Paraguay holds the pro tempore presidency of UNASUR and everything indicates to its possible expulsion of that body, practically unanimous judgment because what happened is considered a violation of the democratic charter of the organization.

However, the main concern may come from the economic side, because Argentina and Brazil strongly condemned the dismissal of Lugo and they are Paraguay’s main trading partners, with direct links to the joint operation of large dams.
