Growing Number of Women in Gangs in the USA -- Chilean Police Suppress Student Protest -- Death Toll in Communal Violence Rises to 77 in Northeast India

Growing Number of Women in Gangs in the USA

A new study by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency (NCCD) in the USA revealed a significant increase in the number of female gang members.

According to the study, only in California the women are 38 percent in the membership of criminal organizations, with a peak rate of 51 percent in the city of Oakland, compared to the national average of women in gangs which is 32 percent.

Although there is no official figures on how many women are part of different gangs in the city of Los Angeles, and where it is estimated that there are more than 45,000 gang members, the hedge ratios are very high.

The appreciation of the students of the subject is taken into account from the programs offered by Homeboy Industries, an institution that provides jobs and training for former gang members from Los Angeles, in which 40 percent of beneficiaries are women.

The recent study presented by the NCCD also states that women gang members commit more crimes than men, are often sexually exploited and presented as an incentive to recruit new men.

Chilean Police Suppress Student Protest

Chilean police cracked down with water and gas cannons a large-scale protest of students who were preparing to march down the Alameda Avenue to demand free public education.

The police blocked the way to the capital’s main avenue, center of mass protests against the neo-liberal socio-political model prevailing in the country.

The spokeswoman of the secondary students, Danae Diaz, said the student unrest has been deepened due to the lack of government response to demands for fundamental changes in education.

The student movement defended the right to demonstrate on the most important Avenue of Santiago, after local authorities banned the path to march and proposed two alternative routes away from the center of the capital.

Radio Universidad de Chile reported that thousands of students were blocked by a large contingent of police special forces, including mounted police.

The highest authorities of this city had warned that if protesters persist in manifest by the Alameda Avenue, the police force would act.

Death Toll in Communal Violence Rises to 77 in Northeast India

The death toll from communal violence in the northeast Indian state of Assam has risen to 77 after four more bodies were recovered Wednesday, reported Press Trust of India.

Two bodies, that of a male and a female from the Muslim community of lower Assam, were recovered from Kokrajhar district of the state, while two other bodies were found on other parts of the district, the report quoted police as saying.

There were some fresh incidents of violence but the police have taken timely action to prevent escalation, said the report.

The rival Bodo and Muslim communities had planned attacks but intelligence inputs helped in preventing the violence. They had planned arson in several interior villages but were thwarted by security forces, according to the report.

Curfew is on in all four strife-torn districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Dhubri over most of the past two weeks after violence erupted in the state, resulting in the replacement of some 400,000 people.
