Telling White Lies

I first heard White Lies while completely immersed in an episode of Gossip Girl. Chuck Bass had returned to New York after his father’s death and was suffering an opium-induced pre quarter-life crisis. He was standing on the ledge contemplating his fate, when I suddenly heard this ominous track in the background. Dark synths, careful beats and authoritative, Interpol-esque style vocals that sang “If you tell me to jump then I’ll die. In my dreams I’m there. I always hoped that I’d learn how to fly. In my dreams I’m there.” After a frantic Google search, I found out this song was E.S.T by White Lies.

White Lies could be the illegitimate child of Joy Division, Interpol and Echo and the Bunnymen, but with a style that is all their own. Their debut album To Lose my Life was released on January 19, 2009 and debuted at Number One. From Ealing in West London, White Lies are currently signed to Fiction Records, home of The Cure, Elbow, Snow Patrol and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. They were lucky enough to have the opportunity to shop around at labels, and carefully choose from all the offers on the table, and in the end personality won.

Formerly known as Fear of Flying, the band consists of Harry McVeigh (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboard), Charles Cave (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Jack Lawrence-Brown (drums).

I recently checked out White Lies at Lee’s Palace with Friendly Fires (they were awesome!) and The Soft Pack (who I missed) for a sold-out NME showcase. White Lies delivered a crowd-pleasing show and were a perfect indie-combo of dark lyrics, black outfits and stark lighting combined with light beats and catchy indie-dance songs.
