Artistic Director Michael Trent will present a world premiere in February 2013, loveloss, created in collaboration with the company.
Rarely creatively motivated by events in his personal life, Trent takes the time to look at the bodily affects of love and loss, after the recent passing of his mother. The body says things in a different way than the voice. Visible and exposed from all sides, the dancers are barely able to hide a gesture or facial expression. Their bodies imagine and sense; the dancers move into love and into loss, out of love and out of loss. loveloss is a group experience, experienced individually.
Michael Trent has been Artistic Director of Dancemakers and the Centre for Creation since August 2006. Works to date for the company include new versions of things in between, Random Access, and Acts of Light as well as new creations Dark, Quiet & Cool, Constructing Doubt, Double Bill #1 with Toronto choreographer Ame Henderson, It’s about time: 60 dances in 60 minutes, Double Bill#2 with Montreal-based choreographer k.g. Guttman, and most recently, The Adaptation Project.
For almost four decades Dancemakers has been on the leading edge of dance in Canada and in 2003 established its current home in the Distillery Historic District. The Centre for Creation – a state-of-the-art 98-seat performance venue and a second rehearsal studio named after the late composer Michael J. Baker – is a place where creativity and creative exchange are fostered and nurtured, where dynamic encounters between artists and public enrich and develop contemporary dance. At Dancemakers’ core is the desire to promote new works rooted in contemporary aesthetics, cross-disciplinary dialogues and collaborative engagement.
