On Friday, May 30, 2003, YONGE-DUNDAS SQUARE officially opened and became the beating heart of the city! For the last ten years, YDS, located at one of Canada’s liveliest intersections, has illuminated downtown Toronto with countless activities and an eclectic range of free public events. For those on the search for some respite from the hectic pace of life, YDS also transforms into a quiet oasis on scheduled fountain days.
The upcoming 10th Anniversary season will launch another year of non-stop entertainment including free concerts by rockin’ musical acts, classic cult films and amazing events. Previous appearances by legendary artists at YDS have included Beyoncé, The Flaming Lips, Shania Twain, Broken Social Scene, John Mayer and Iggy Pop. The Square has also hosted some of the city’s biggest special events including Buskerfest, Luminato, North By North East, Nuit Blanche, and TIFF.
On Friday, August 9, YDS will hold the biggest birthday party any ten-year-old has ever seen and everyone is invited! First, spectacular buskers will entertain the crowds while activities abound. The beer garden opens at 4pm, and beginning at 7pm, a line-up of Canadian musical superstars will entertain into the evening, including Divine Brown, Royal Wood and Spirit of the West!
From May 27 – June 17 and September 16 – October 7, YDS presents LUNCHTIME LIVE!, a series of free singer/songwriter lunchtime concerts from 12:30-1:30pm every Monday. Canada’s most critically acclaimed jazz, folk and roots artists will appear including trendsetter Elizabeth Shepherd, Chic Gamine with their the wall of sound harmonies, and Toronto’s own The Wilderness of Manitoba.
From June 25 – August 27, YDS presents City Cinema: CULT CLASSICS, free outdoor screenings of classic cult films, at sunset, every Tuesday. Films include the hilarious “Anchorman, The Legend of Ron Burgundy,” the beyond-quirky “Napoleon Dynamite,” and all time cult classic, “The Godfather.”
From June 28 – September 6, Virgin Mobile presents INDIE FRIDAYS, free concerts every Friday night from 8-10pm. Toronto’s biggest patio will be the hot spot to cool down with performances by in demand cover-band Dwayne Gretzky, indie darlings Plants and Animals, and Toronto hip hop sensation Cadence Weapon.
