Referendum Proposal on Political Reform in Brazil Gains Strength

pict-brazil-referendumThe proposal by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to hold a referendum in Brazil on fundamental aspects of political reform currently has the support of political parties, trade unions, and social movements.

Rousseff’s meetings this week with representatives of trade unions, social movements and leaders from the government-allied political groups fostered the defense of this project, which seeks to respond to protesters’ claims in the streets.

Justice Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo, stated yesterday that there was consensus on the conduct of the referendum, during the president’s meeting with the highest representatives of groups that support the executive.

“The participation of society is not limited to a Yes or a No,” he said, referring to another alternative, launched by the opposition, of opting for the referendum, in which the Congress draws up the laws and the voters vote.

Along with the Justice Minister, his Education colleague Aloizio Mercadante defended the idea of the referendum, and noted that the head of State intends to present this proposal at the Congress next week.

The consultation would be held in the shortest possible time, so that possible changes in the political system approved by citizens come into force 12 months later, and can be considered during the 2014 general elections.
