Iran Announces Negotiations with Russia to Build Second Nuclear Plant

iranIran is negotiating with Russia the construction of a second nuclear plant in the southwest Iranian province of Bushehr, official sources in this capital revealed today.

The head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, Ali Akbar Salehi, reported “the beginning in brief” of conversations with the UN entity in charge of this sphere for the beginning of the second stage of bilateral collaboration.

“We are discussing with the Russians the construction of a second nuclear plant in Bushehr,” Salehi said, adding that this agreement was closed after signing a preliminary agreement with the Group 5+1.

At the end of last November, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Russia, United States, China, France, and the United Kingdom, plus Germany reached an understanding according to which Tehran would stop enriching uranium in return for the cessation of sanctions.

A fully operational electric power plant located in Bushehr was shut down last week for refueling, a standard process that is repeated every six months, according to official media.

Regarding conversations with the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA), Akbar Salehi declared to the IRNA news agency that inspectors from the entity were authorized to visit previously reserved places and receive additional technical information as a part of the process to restore relations with the international community.

Last November, the Islamic Republic and the IAEA signed a collaborative agreement during a visit of the Managing Director to Tehran, the Japanese Yukiya Amano, independent from the one signed with the G5+1 (PL)
