US Analyzes Cyber War Against Syria

syriaThe US government is analyzing its possibilities to carry out cyber attacks against Syrian installations and the command structure of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said US newspaper The New York Times Tuesday.

Practically, since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, in 2011, the US Pentagon and the National Security Agency developed a plan of attack that counted on a sophisticated cyber war component.

A few weeks ago, during a meeting with King Abdallah II of Jordan in California, US President Barack Obama said the US government is “considering new and old options” against Damascus, but is trying to avoid the commitment for the presence of US troops in the combat scenario.

The US newspaper said that for Obama, these methods “seem to be an obvious alternative, with a low cost, and which will not provoke victims.”

The White House has not made up its mind on any aggression tactic against Syria yet, though.

The New York Times talked about a variety of aspects of a new but not-yet-tested tactic, which may transform the nature of the conflict, and in which the US government has spent billions of dollars.

Something that has stopped the use of this kind of aggression is the fear to the fact that if an attack of that kind, its electrical net or its leadership, would provoke reprisals in Syria, in Iran or in Russia against the US national territory.

The National Security Council met last Thursday to analyze the choices, and it is hard to say how much the government will spend exactly.(PL)
