I want to show you just how helpful the city of Toronto can be when it comes to one-on-one activities with the fairer sex.  You have met someone, been through the awkward phone number attainment process, and survived.  The next fiery hoop that you need to jump through is picking the perfect date locale.  Scratch that, it does not have to be the perfect spot, just the right one.

If you truly want to be on this date and are excited about this girl, you are going to be nervous.  I am hoping the following helps you curb any pre-date jitters by telling you what’s good for the guy (gander), the girl (goose), and what pitfalls to avoid when planning and executing a day or evening with a special someone.

I am going to let you in on a little secret – everybody loves going to the ROM.  It is not lame, nerdy, or boring.  What’s good for the goose?  Light & Stone: Gems from the Collection of Michael Scott.  What’s good for the gander? James and Louise Temerty Galleries of the Age of Dinosaurs.  Yes, these are very stereotypical choices for men and women, but in actuality every single exhibit can be enjoyed by everyone.  Going on a date to a museum allows for intelligent and engaging discussion, which will help both parties figure out how much of a match they are initially on an intellectual level.  That can also be read another way: Find out as soon as possible if your date is a moron.  That said, avoid arguing with your date or talking down to her as this can get messy very quickly (and who really cares if a Pterosaur was part of the Cretaceous Period.  Lastly, trust me when I say that making out in the bat cave is one of the coolest things you can say you have ever done.

Granted, sports are not everybody’s thing.  However, most people like watching sports live and in person.  Going to a Blue Jays game means nine innings, two and a half to four hours of conversation, and over-priced stadium food.  Unless you are both avid baseball fans and actually enjoy watching everything happening on the diamond, you will need to talk to each other.  A lot.  This can be a blessing or a curse depending on how well the two of you get along.  What’s good for the goose?  The chance to enjoy some live baseball in an exciting atmosphere with good conversation.  What’s good for the gander?  You would probably be going to the game anyway, so this is a great opportunity to treat someone to a fun activity and flex your conversational muscles.  Avoid boring your date by talking too much about sports, as this is an incredibly easy pitfall for guys to fall into.  Try to catch yourself before you start listing off the 1995 World Series Champion Atlanta Braves starting roster.

Laughing together equals success on any date.  You can engage in some harmless multitasking in seeing improv comedy by figuring out if your date has a similar sense of humour, or any humour for that matter.  The two of you can talk about the hopefully funny skits after the show over dinner and continue sharing laughs.  What’s good for the goose?  Avoid any potential awkwardness by sitting back, relaxing, and letting those on stage do the entertaining.  What’s good for the gander?  Most guys I know are huge fans of improv comedy.  With any luck there will be a plethora of potty humour thrown into the performances.  The main thing to watch for is if your date is laughing along with you.  What is funny to you may not be funny for her, and it is always important to take your date’s feelings into account.

Cook a Meal Together – Your place or mine?
lucky you dvd In most circumstances, this is definitely not a first date activity.  Both of you need to be completely comfortable knowing that the bedroom is only a few paces from the kitchen.  The idea here is to share in a fun activity that will no doubt promote teamwork and some great exchanges.  Try to work in a trip to a specialty cheese store such as About Cheese (3467 Yonge Street).  It can be the perfect opportunity to learn about cheeses from an enthusiastic staff and bring one home to add to your meal.  This will prove to be classier and more interactive than grabbing what is in the freezer at the supermarket.  What’s good for the goose?  An opportunity to see how useful or useless the guy is in the kitchen.  What’s good for the gander?  Everyone knows the male is thinking he is that much closer to getting some.

Make sure your date is on a Saturday night because that is when glow in the dark cosmic bowling takes place.  This also hides the hideous retro 70’s upholstery of browns, dark oranges, and dirty yellows that dominate the Bowlerama.  What’s good for the goose?  A little healthy competition can lead to even healthier flirting.  What’s good for the gander?  You don’t have to try to let her win because everybody is pretty terrible at bowling.  Try not to wear a stained shirt or pants, and make sure your dandruff is under control – Glow in the dark bowling reveals all. 
  
Picking a great date locale will help the courting process in the short term.  However, staying attentive to your date and the signs she is giving you will help you gather information so that future meetings run smoothly.  Always be ready to switch up your plans or tailor the night to what you feel will be most comfortable.  The more fun you and she have, the better the date is going.  Sharing and laughing is the name of the game.
