Do judge this book by its cover! The content is as deliciously enticing as the visual on the front. This is a must- read for any foodie—especially if meat is your vice; if you eat, sleep and dream about meat like I do, you won’t be able to put this book down.
Scott Gold, a New Orleans transplant in New York City has adoringly put together this LMAO hilarious, informative and well researched read on all things meat. The book includes some fun facts, meat guide comparisons and recipes. On a more serious note, it explores the complexity of meat consumption, which includes the ethics and practices in meat production from breeding and raising animals, to butchering them.
A few chapters in his book are dedicated to his “Month of Meat”, of which he and his pals cook and sample a number of different meats and cuts. This journey leads him to experience exotic/ game meat such as ostrich, yak, guinea pigs, llama, squab, rattlesnake and many more. I, myself have tried many of the animals on his list and then some. His list is unfortunately limited by availability and FDA restrictions in United States. *I imagine he would really enjoy a succulent horse steak (available in Canada) and a delightful monkey stew, which I had during my travel to Southern China.
His adventure in meat-eating also took him to roads less traveled, such as the swamps of Louisiana where a couple of unfortunate squirrels meet their creator and ended up on his dinner plate. Our author then goes to the Testicle Festival “Testy Festy” in Montana where he experiences a weekend of red neck culture along with some testicular goodness.
