Jan Troell’s engaging and bittersweet drama is based in the true story of Maria Larsson, a working class Swedish woman who wins a camera in a lottery and goes on to become a photographer . Set against the backdrop of volatile and emerging industrial life in Sweden in the early 1900’s, this tale begins with the harsh reality of Maria Larsson’s life while married to her brutish husband. One night after a beating, she takes her small mob of children and runs away to her father for help. Her father however makes her promise on his death bed to never leave her husband until her dying day.

Her husband has a complex character that runs the gamut of loving, charming, philandering and violent behaviors. A hard worker, he is loyal to his friends and has a strong intuitive understanding of animals. His affection for his children is clear as his he proclivity for chasing after women. Maria clearly loves and hates him, but she is trapped by her deathbed promise and the lack of options available to women at the time.
With her husband out of work, Maria decides to pawn her lottery camera. Her encounter with the kind and gentlemanly photographer Sebastian Pedersen forever changes her life for the better. Enchanted with the shy Mrs. Larsson, Sebastian decides to let her “take care of the camera” until he is ready to sell it. After a brief lesson, he gives her some supplies and encourages her to learn how to use the camera. In so doing, Maria begins to discover many things about herself including her own innate talent for capturing life’s “everlasting moments”.
