Indie Highlights: Joanna Moon

By Mikhail Saavedra

joanna
Joanna Moon creates a intensely unique sound, mixing both the latin-flamenco flavour with an unmistakable Quebecois soul. She possesses an uniquely gifted voice, listening to her music there is a hint of an old soul reminding us of long lost passions.

I had the opportunity to ask her some questions in regards to her latest work “Vagamunda”:

What got you started in the world of music? Was it by change or simply an inevitability of the soul?

Inevitability of the soul!!! I love that…may steal it from you. Ah!Ah! It describe very well how I feel about the whole thing. I wandered around playing Folk/ Rock and progressive music until I fell upon Spanish Flamenco music and listen to it seriously and with great interest. Then it fell like I had received “my call” if you know what I mean. I started to see every Roma (Gipsy) movie and read about them and fell my heart starting to beat faster and my head beginning to spin around. I was in Love! Passionately in love with that music and that people. It’s in my guts, nothing I can do about it but try to live it the best I can being a French Canadian born in Quebec where winters last for 11 months, where the sun is very shy…

Can you tell us a bit about your newest work and the ideas behind it?

So I got inspired to take what I had as musical background and the way I write my stuff and started adding Flamenco/ Latino colors to spice it a bit and make my sound my own recipe. I also choose to have people from different cultures surrounding me to give even more flavor to the project. Spanish, Ukrainian, German, French and English are blending together and represent what and who I feel I am: A citizen of the world. I am just passing by trying to do what I do the best I can.

How can people find out more about you and your wonderful work?
