The group of more than 100 armored cars completed the withdrawal early today, when the fence marking the boundary between Iraq and Kuwait was closed.

While state television channel Al-Iraqiya showed video footage of the withdrawal, other Iraqi government media reported the jubilation felt by most citizens, some of whom named this Sunday as “the day of true liberation”.

The withdrawal of troops from Iraq, where the Pentagon has deployed up to 170,000 soldiers in 505 military bases, was completed after three official acts to mark the closure of an occupation that has cost Washington almost one trillion USD, according to official information.

During the war in Iraq, U.S. troops lost about 4,400 soldiers, and nearly 30,000 were wounded or suffered from diverse traumas. Iraq, on the other hand, suffered more than 100,000 casualties, most of them civilians.
