Event: Forum on Community Media vs. Corporate Media – April 14, 2012

As you may be aware there are several attempts on multiple media platforms to challenge the hegemony of what is now called the “corporate media” (media outlets owned by large corporations). One of this instances that we think might be of interest to all those that are finding themselves not represented by the current mainstream is the current one happening in Venezuela with an explosion of community based media.

But what is this all about? What does it mean to Canadians and anyone interested in media/journalism??  To find out you are all invited to a Forum on Community Media vs. Corporate Media and the lessons that have emerged from Venezuela and its community media, which played a fundamental role in the resistance against the 2002 coup d’état in Venezuela. You will hear from Carlos Hurtado, president of the Community Television Station ‘Lara TVE’ and a representative of the ;National Association of Alternative and Community Media’ in Venezuela. The forum is free of charge and will commence at 10 a.m. at the Innis Town Hall, 2 Sussex Ave, Toronto, on Saturday April 14, 2012. Simultaneous translation and free food will also be provided.

Organized by the ‘Avanzada Bolivariana Campaign’ and the ‘Consulate General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Toronto’. www.venezuelasolidarity.ca
