Social Heroes: Homework Help

The “Hero”Homework Help

What is so great about them?: Imagine completely FREE math tutoring for your children. It will cost you nothing and it can be done directly from your computer. Homework Help is a math resource for all Ontario public school students in grades 7 – 10. It is also available 24/7, so in a sense it is like having a permanent teacher. Imagine the possibilities this could have for your children. The good doesn’t end there as this is also a great resource for teachers.

The details: The site offers interactive activities, videos of over 250 math topics, a math glossary and much more. On top of this permanent and helpful tool students can log in Sunday to Thursday from 5:30pm – 9:30pm EST for free, real-time online tutoring, connecting students with certified Ontario teachers for extra support. Each Ask a Tutor chat room has a shared whiteboard where both the tutor and the student can draw and write as they work together to develop a solution. It is state of the art technology and thought out to reach to children who already spend a lot of time in front of electronic devices like computers, tablets and phones.

Homework Help is run by TVO’s Independent Learning Centre with support from the Ontario Government. To get more information on this unique program we spoke to Homework Help’s very knowledgeable Outreach Officer Isha Seth to get some background information:

How did the program come about?

-          Homework Help began helping students in two school boards in 2007.  Homework Help expanded over the years, and now offers math support to grade 7 to 10 students in English public school boards across Ontario.

What is the goal behind HWH?

-          Homework Help is an online platform providing math support for students, teachers and parents. The website helps to support learning after the school day finishes and allows students to get the help they need, when they need it.  Our resources are completely free; no child should have to fall behind because they don’t have access to the right tools.

What is the future and ultimate goal of the program?

-          We are hoping to register the 600,000 students in all 60 school boards to ensure every child has access to the math help they need.
