Violence against Women is Everyone’s Responsibility, Bachelet

United Nations declared today that the problem of violence against women is a responsibility of all, an urgent priority and a disaster that affects peace and progress.

This is already the time for governments to keep their promises, to protect human rights and respect international agreements and projects they have signed on this matter, said the executive director of the agency UN-Women, Michelle Bachelet.

In a message for Women’s International Day the Chilean ex President declared that ‘the change is possible and it is happening’ referring to fighting violence against women.

There are several voices claiming to stop silence and indiference for these acts and the raising conscience in favor of the rights of this sector is growing.

However, she is concerned about the still high levels of discrimination, violence and exclusion together with the frequent cases of victims that are expecting justice without success.

In the meeting of UN Comission on the Legal Status of the Woman that began yesterday in New York, the also general undersecretary of the United Nations called to work on a consensus generating agreements to wipe out violence.

She claimed for speeding up the neccesary changes to eradicate violence and she wondered how more women and girls have to be raped or murdered and why many more families have to suffer.

In her message Bachelet encouraged a rejection of discrimination, domestic and sexual violence, harassment  rapes, human being trades, slavery, genital mutilation, child marriage, the murders of women and impunity towards those crimes.

‘There can not be peace neither progress as long as women live with fear and suffering violence’, she concluded.

Korea: North, South Exchange Threats

The North and South Korean governments exchanged today serious threats amid the existing growing tension, while Chinese authorities continue calling on both parties to remain calm.

According to Pyongyang’s reports, the government of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) decided to abrogate all non-aggression pacts with South Korea.

The DPRK also decided to close the Panmujon communication channel responding to the sanctions adopted on Thursday by the U.N. Council of Security against the North Korean government.

Two hours after the U.N. agreement, leader Kim Jong Un stated DPRK soldiers are ready for all-out war.

On the other hand, spokespersons of the South Korean Ministry of Defense noted in Seoul that if the DPRK launches a nuclear attack against the Republic of Korea “it would vanish from the earth following the will of mankind”.

Appointed South Korean Minister of Defense Kim Byung-kwan underlined his nation will respond to any aggression.

North Korea accuses the United States and South Korea of increasing the tension in the peninsula and encourage a war against its republic and insists that a dangerous situation floods the Korean peninsula since a nuclear war can occur at any given moment.
