IPU Calls for Elections in Egypt

egyptThe Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) urged Egypt’s interim authorities the restoration of democratic institutions in the country, and the holding of presidential and legislative elections.

In statements in Geneva and distributed at the UN headquarters in New York, IPU President Abdelwahad Radi advocated for the establishment of “a strong, fully representative parliament of the Egyptian society.”

He also exhorted “to immediately organize” elections to elect a president and a new parliament, “defending the state of law and an impartial judicial system.”

The IPU advocates for the establishment of a strong legislative body, which is fully representative of Egyptian society, the official added.

Radi reaffirmed the commitment of the organization to provide assistance and support the Egyptian parliament, and called for the country “not to stray off the path to establish a true democracy as soon as possible.”

The armed forces yesterday dismissed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, and instead, they appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour.

The army announced a plan for the formation of a presidential council, a government of independents, and a new constitution drafting committee, as well as presidential and legislative elections within nine to 12 months.

Egypt’s Interim President Swears in

Egypt’s Interim President Adly Mansour today sworn in his post in a ceremony with no military presence in which he called the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) an “evil force.”

While the new interim president was swearing in, fighter jets were flying over this capital gasifying the colors of the Egyptian flag, showing the victory of the military on Wednesday, the key factor in the overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsi.

“I swear by God to uphold the Republican system and respect the constitution and law,” said Mansour, who recalled that MB members besieged the Constitutional Supreme Court headquarters and prevented him from fulfilling his duties.

Mansour also said that he fulfills the law of a supreme power, the Egyptian people, and promised to call for presidential and legislative elections with the participation of all forces, without discrimination  with youth in first place.

Young activists, led by April 6th Youth Movement, organized the campaign to collect Tamarod (Rebel) signatures, which resulted in 22 million of signatures from people who demanded the resignation of the Islamist president.

The nomination of Mansour, president of the Constitutional Supreme Court, was announced yesteday in a plan presented by the Armed Forces Command, after expiring the term given to former president Mohamed Morsi for reaching an agreement with the opposition, who took the streets demanding his resignation.

According to Muslim Brotherhood spokesmen, Morsi and his government top figures remain held under house arrest at the Ministry of Defense since last night in this capital.
