A Chinese New Year Celebration with the TSO

Hosted by Dashan, Featuring Yuja Wang, with a Special Appearance by Song Zuying Monday, February 3, 2014 @ 8pm

TSOThe Toronto Symphony Orchestra presents, for the first time ever, a special Chinese New Year Concert celebrating the Year of the Horse.  Tickets prices range from $28 – $138 and are now available at TSO.ca.  A Gala package is also available and includes Price Level I tickets, a pre-show reception at Roy Thomson Hall and a post-show dinner with the artists at the Shangri-La Hotel. Please contact TSO Special Events at 416.593.7769 X261.

The Year of the Horse symbolizes happiness, loyalty, and a strong work ethic.  People born in the year of the horse enjoy being the centre of attention as well as participating in large cultural events, especially concerts! The TSO’s The Year of the Horse: A Chinese New Year Celebration concert and gala is the perfect way to ring in the new year on the Chinese calendar.

Long Yu, Chief Conductor of the China Philharmonic and Music Director of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, will lead the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in traditional Chinese and western orchestral music, including Rachmaninoff’s dazzling Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, performed by the sensational Yuja Wang. Ms. Wang hypnotized TSO audiences last June with her performances of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto 2 and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 Mvt. 1.

Taiwanese-American violinist Cho-Liang Lin, artistic director of the Hong Kong International Chamber Music Festival, will be featured in Dvořák’s Romance in F Minor for Violin and Orchestra.

Ms. Wang and Mr. Lin will join Shanghai-born cellist Jian Wang for the GRAMMY® and Oscar® winning composer Tan Dun’s Triple Resurrection. This new work is the fourth part of his Martial Arts Cycle, a set of concerti for soloists, orchestra and video based on the composer’s award-winning film scores.

An exciting addition to the TSO’s Year of the Horse programme is the internationally acclaimed and Grammy®-nominated Chinese Soprano, Song Zuying, who will be making her TSO début with this special appearance.

The evening will be hosted by Dashan (Mark Henry Rowswell), a Canadian-born foreign national who has become a bona fide domestic celebrity in China’s media industry.  For over twenty years, Dashan has appeared as a host, performer, and public speaker serving as the most famous Western cultural ambassador between East and West.
