China, Taiwan Governments Hold First Meeting in 65 Years

taiwan - chinaChina and Taiwan held official government talks in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, to discuss their relations for the first time in 65 years.

China and Taiwan split ever since the Kuomintang, led by the late Chiang Kai-shek, escaped to the Island in 1949 after being defeated in the civil war in this country which concluded with the proclamation that year of the People’s Republic of China.

The meeting between Zhang Zhijun, head of the Council of State Office for Taiwan Affairs; and Wang Yu-chi, head of the China Affairs in Taiwan, was held in Nanjing shortly after the arrival to the city of the Taiwanese official, who will carry out a four-day visit in China.

China and Taiwan started non government organization meetings created by the two parties in 1980, and this is the first time that high-level government meetings have taken place.

According to experts, the exchange of opinions between Zhang and Wang is a significant step forward in the relations between the two parties and could lead to regular visits in the near future. (PL)
