Pound Sterling at the Core of Debates on Scotland’s Independence

PoundThe United Kingdom on Wednesday ratified its refusal to share the pound sterling with eventually independent Scotland, from where London is accused of exerting threats and pressure.

In light of the referendum on independence scheduled for September 18, the British government has the intention of making official its refusal to share that currency on Thursday in case Scots approve the separation, BBC reported.

Although Scottish Prime Minister Alex Salmond’s plan is to continue using the pound sterling after secession is achieved, London has repeatedly expressed its refusal, which Finance Minister George Osborn will make official as soon as possible.

Scottish Deputy Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon accused the United Kingdom of resorting to threats and pressure as part of its campaign against Scotland’s independence. In that regard, she pointed out that denying the use of the currency would go against the will of both Scottish and British citizens.

In addition, she noted, it would cause huge losses to companies from the UK, which would have to assume the British debt by itself.

The campaigns in favor and against Scotland’s independence started in January to speed up its actions, and the main topics for debate have been the currency and international politics. (PL)
