President Obama Faces Difficult Meeting in Mexico

ObamaPresident Barack Obama will face a difficult situation during the meeting in Toluca, Mexico, with his partners of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), international politics experts estimate.

Obama will travel to Mexico on Tuesday to attend the seventh Summit of North American Leaders aiming at strengthening integration and regional cooperation, but with an agenda, still stagnated in the Congress, that prevents him from moving forward.

According to sources of the White House during bilateral meetings and with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the leader has little to offer after his immigration reform, which affects millions of Mexicans, is at a standstill.

The problem with Canada will not be any less difficult since the approval of Keystone XL oil pipeline, which will get oil from that country to refineries in Texas, is still being discussed by Congress.

Ottawa authorities note that Harper will debate the problem when meeting Obama and the final decision could strain or not bilateral relations.

Although no great announcements are expected to occur in Toluca, officials with the Obama administration expect to move forward on the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), immigration reform, and other goals. (PL)
