Cuba Presents Initiatives to Confront Ebola in the Americas

cuba_ebolaEstablishing  epidemiological surveillance in centers destined for people from areas of Ebola transmission, in each country, is one of the initiatives defined by experts of the region in the Americas.

During a technical meeting held in Havana with experts and directors from 34 nations of the hemisphere for the prevention of that epidemic, several proposals were presented as a guide for future work.

They include encouraging the development of multidisciplinary rapid response groups properly trained, ensuring the compliance with biosafety requirements, establishing cooperation between regulatory authorities in the countries of the region for the transfer of biological samples across borders.

Developing new vaccines and products for the treatment of Ebola virus, and strengthening inter-sectorial relations in borders to get the most complete information about ships, crews and travelers arriving to each state, are also on the list.

During the meeting, attended by 278 experts and directors (168 Cubans and 110 from other nationalities), and representatives of the World Health Organization, the Pan-American Health Organization and other international and regional institutions, the commitment of solidarity, cooperation and integration from Cuba to other nations was reiterated.

Participants in the event also decided to convene the first international course for the prevention of Ebola to be run at the “Pedro Kouri” Tropical medicine Institute in Havana, on November 10-15. (PL)
