Toronto based power-duo ‘The Books Elusive’ have a great sound, killer songs, and plans to keep em’ coming! Members Damon De Szegheo and Lynne Dubec sat down to answer a ‘six-pack’ of questions for Alternavox. Sorry Avoxers, but this is required reading and this first chapter will be on the test.

1.How did you two first start making music together?

Damon and I have known each other for about 4 years now – we actually met over Myspace! He was working as a producer/engineer here in Toronto and I was finishing my Bachelor’s Degree at Trent University in Peterborough (where he had graduated from a few years earlier). I was in my first band at that time and Damon came across our myspace page and left a comment. After writing back and forth for a while we met in Peterborough and have known each other since. He had worked with a number of musicians that I was really into at the time, and I was also in the midst of making home recordings of my band – so he was a great person to talk to.

In 2006 I moved to Toronto to go to teacher’s college and one weekend Damon and I decided to go in to the studio on a whim to record a few songs I had written. There really wasn’t a conscious choice from either of us to start a band, The earliest form of what became the books elusive was a decision to record some analog demos over beers at the horseshoe. I guess in that way we’re ass backwards. We made a record first, then started a band.

2.Where does the name ‘Books Elusive’ come from?

We originally wanted to be called The Books but there are literally dozens of bands called The Books. We played with it a little, gave it an add on to introduce a little bit of mystery.. a little intrigue. It’s also a sentence fragment just to make it more of a brain twister. Because of that people will often reorder the name into ‘The Elusive Books’ which is a piss off. We’ve also been called ‘the good looks exclusive’ which we totally dig in contrast. Damon has a long philosophical explaination about how all written knowledge comes out of the potential infinite combination of the 26 letters of the alphabet.. in that way all books have this ‘other’ elusive quality in that all meaning – or potential for all meaning – is imbeded within any string of letters.. deep eh? Can you tell Damon went to university for philosophy?

3.How would you describe your sound?

If you take the broadstrokes of 80s hair-metal without all of the noodling and hairspray – you get us – dark power rock. We rip faces off with loudness.

4.Who are your influences?

cars movie

Musically – we don’t really share influences or consider other artists’ work in comparison to our own. Outside the books elusive, Damon runs a folk label and I play and write a lot of alt-country these days. We’re more influenced by people and relationships – like those who say “can’t” and stop themselves before trying, when a challenge presents itself we choose to always go farther. Likewise we take a lot of inspiration from ‘like minded’ people who choose the same positive outlook.

5.What is the most memorable show you’ve played so far and what is your favorite band to play with?

We played a rock off once where us and another 2 piece band set up at that same time, like a boxing match – and went song for song seeing who could out rock each other. They wore face paint, had a smoke machine and got loud and belligerent, so we got louder, smashed our instruments and almost hit them with flying gear to top it. It was quite a spectacle.

6.When can we see you play next?

If you’re up north in Burleigh Falls, Ontario next week we’ll be scaring some loons and local cottagers with the recording of our next record. It will be the only time we play for the canoe crowd so you should come out! It will be truly obnoxious.
