The subtle graduation of irregularly shaped color blocks, pieced meticulously along side each other. Varying tints and shades of pinks, gray’s beiges and browns. Held together to create a whole. These blocks form what was once a nondescript seating area or holding place, a subway car, a set of stairs, and an exterior office block.

Monolithic office towers meandering off the canvas in a tilt that takes the eye so far that you believe for a moment that the canvas is contorting into an odd parallelogram.

This exact and rigid perspective is obviously that of a student of architecture. The spaces he builds on his canvas are pristine. The exact placement of color doesn’t steer off the lines. I would like to see his childhood coloring books, perfect and complete I’m sure. There is such attention to detail. I walk away thinking, lets get him to design our new office block!

Jon Reed is a recent graduate of Architectural studies at the University of Toronto. This body of work was created when he was completing his Masters there.

When I ask Jon what inspires him he immediately mentions his mentor and teacher, Joanne Tod. “She is one of the major influences on my career”

He has worked with her on a few public art projects, proposals, and continues to work with her on new projects.

“These are common urban spaces. Places people can relate to.”

says Reed, “Waiting places. Places where you can retreat into your own thoughts. Places where there are no people. It’s always difficult to put people into your renderings and drawings, so my concentration is on the space.”

When I ask Jon if he will have time to paint once his career takes off he tells me. “I will continue to paint. I have a series of paintings in mind that I have already begun and I will have another show when I get the chance.” His answer is as direct and succinct as his placement of paint on canvas.
